This is the back from Alaska and Vinyl show.
Playlist:
No Ceiling – Eddie Vedder
From the soundtrack to the movie Into The Wild about the idealistic, yet naïve Christopher McCandless and his journey to and eventual death in Alaska. I just got back from Alaska early this morning and it is very easy to see how the place could have such a powerful pull. It was absolutely awesome and awe inspiring how beautiful, unspoiled, and BIG the state is.
The Righteous Path – Drive By Truckers
What Deaner Was Talking About – Ween
Been waiting for the latest DBT album, Brighter Than Creation’s Dark, to be released on vinyl…well worth the wait. Ween song from the re-released Live in Toronto album from their country tour.
Pali Gap – Jimi Hendrix
It’s All Right – The Impressions
Come See About Me – The Supremes
Little known fact that Hendrix was actually a backup musician for the Impressions (as well as the Isley Brother, Sam Cooke, and Little Richard) for a bit during the mid-60’s before he was “discovered.”
I’m Only Sleeping – The Beatles
Waves, Etc/Cats Love a Parade/Speak in Many Colors – Robert Pollard
The entire second side of the Silverfish Trivia EP that was only released on vinyl. Mr. Pollard has stated many times the influence the Beatles have had on his music.
Mood Indigo – Duke Ellington
Pretty new to the Duke, but I love what I’ve heard. Pretty huge catalogue to choose from as he was creating music for over 50 years.
July 13, 2008 10:40 AM PDT
Playlist:
Touch Me I’m Sick – Mudhoney
They are playing the Sub Pop 20th Anniversary show this weekend…and also a free show in the KEXP parking lot on Wednesday, the 23rd of July. New album out, which I haven’t picked up yet, but the songs I’ve heard from it kick ass. This one is from their classic first album that helped put Sub Pop on the map, along with a little band called Nirvana.
www.subpop.com
Far Gone and Out – The Jesus and Mary Chain
Head On – Pixies
The Jesus and Mary Chain is out again on tour…not sure if they ever went away, but definitely haven’t put anything out lately or toured. Head On is a cover of a Jesus and Mary Chain song off the last Pixies album, Trompe Le Monde. Not one you hear people talk about a lot, but it was the first one I heard and probably still my favorite.
Mean Eyed Cat – Johnny Cash
Here Comes My Girl – Tom Petty
Dayton, Ohio – 19 Something and 5 – Guided By Voices
When you hear Me Howling - Jimmy Lee Williams
Of Evil/For Evil - South San Gabriel
Jimmy Lee Williams…another gem turned up by the Fat Possum record label.
www.fatpossum.com
Walkin’ – Miles Davis
From the beginning of Miles’ second great quintet. Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and for a bit Sam Rivers as featured on this recording from Tokyo who was later replaced by Wayne Shorter. A quick not on Miles, if you have any interest in jazz you should read his autobiography…it’s probably the best jazz book…heck I’ll even say best autobiography I’ve ever read.

Kingpin/Wilco
This one is on the double disc Being There. Probably my favorite Wilco album, it’s a nice mix of their country and rock/alt rock sounds. http://wilcoworld.net/tours/index.php Check out their summer tour dates here, a great live band especially with Nels Cline now adding his guitar soundz.
Randy Describes Eternity/Built to Spill
From the Perfect From Now On record that they will be playing in its entirety this summer at a couple festivals and I know of at least one show that they are playing with Dinosaur Jr. and the Meat Puppets.
Elevate Me Later/Pavement
This was the first Pavement album I ever got, actually I think my brother got it but it is still my favorite. I took this from the expanded double disk edition with tons of demos/extra tracks. A great summer, hanging out in the back yard album.
A Quick One While He’s Away/The Who
This was Pete Townshends first try at writing a rock opera. This one is a bit shorter than the other ones he would go on to write, but pretty powerful. This version is from the Live at Leeds 1970 album. If you consider yourself a Who fan and don’t have this you should really be making a trip to the record shop today.
Pendelum/Guided By Voices
This version is from the Live at Austin City Limits show during the Electrifying Conclusion tour. Some great lines in this one…best opening line ever? “Come on over tonight, we’ll put on some Cat Butt and do it up right” and I love “ and we’ll be middle aged children but so what?” Word is is that Robert Pollard is going to head back on the road this fall. Sweet.
Poor Girl/Eddie Vedder and the Supersuckers
This is a cover of the X song that is on a compilation benefiting the West Memphis Three. Check out the link here to find out what that’s all about. http://www.wm3.org/splash.php
I’m Your Man/Richard Hell and the Voidoids
This one is on the classic Blank Generation album. Blank wasn’t meant to be taken as meaning that the generation is blank, it was supposed to give you the option to fill in the blank and call your generation whatever you wanted.
Girl of My Dreams/Dizzy Gillespie
Just got this one not to long ago. It’s a live recording from the early 70’s as part of series that releases the jazz greats recorded in Paris. I got a few other ones and whenever I see them in the used bin at the record store I try to get them.
May 10, 2008 07:05 PM PDT
I Don’t Wanna Grow Up/Tom Waits
Well here’s some words of wisdom from Mr. Tom Waits. He’s jammin out again with a new album coming up and a small tour, unfortunately not hitting Seattle though. This is from the Bone Machine album...heard a story that he wanted all the music on this record to sound as if it was being made by bones clanking together.
Ammaring/J Mascis and the Fog
This track is from the sessions that J and the Fog did for John Peel. The Fog being Mike Watt on thudstaff (bass) and George Berz on drums. Amma is the famous hugging saint. There is advertising for her visit to Seattle on some of the busses around town and it always makes me think of this song.
Pull Your Clothes Off/Junior Kimbrough
There is a great documentary film called ‘You See Me Laughin’ put out by the boys at Fat Possum Records that tells the story of Junior and other country blues guys still shaking the roadhouses in the South. It’s sad, joyous, and completely unbelievable to see how these guys are still living the blues. This is off of the Sad Days, Lonely Nights album.
Bury Me/The Hides
My bro, Eric, just turned me on to this Cincinnati band. It features one of the members of the now defunct Ass Ponys and they get compared to Neil Young a lot…which in my opinion is pretty high praise. Picked this song off of I-tunes so I could get something from them on the show. They got a new album coming out soon which I will definitely be picking up.
Barstool Blues/Neil Young
Off of the Zuma album, one of his albums that you don’t hear people talk about a lot I guess but it’s one of my faves. It came out in 1975 when he had Crazy Horse backing him up, which is how I prefer my Neil.
Mr. Superlove/Afghan Whigs
Ok, this is a cover of an Ass Ponys song found on the What Jail is Like ep. A nice little collection Whigs songs. I was a fan of this song way before I knew it was a cover. I think it’s pretty cool when Cincinnati bands like the Whigs cover lesser known Cincinnati bands.
7th Level Shutdown/Robert Pollard and His Soft Rock Renegades
Got this one off of the Crickets compilation, which sums up Pollards 44 Fading Captain label releases of singles, ep’s, side projects, etc. The compilation is great as it takes the highlights from all of his side projects, because there is no way I have enough money to get every album he releases.
I Burn Today/Frank Black
This is on his Honeycomb album that was cut with a group of longtime Nashville session musicians backing him up. So I guess that Frank Black is now Black Francis again. Alright.
May Day/Elvis Perkins
My girlfriend, Heather, turned me on to this ‘Elvis.’ This song is from the Ash Wednesday album, a favorite of ours for playing in the car. I had assumed he was related to Carl Perkins, but I just looked him up on wikipedia and he is the son of actor Anthony Perkins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Perkins
Raise Four/Thelonious Monk
You can find this on the Underground album, one of his more critically acclaimed albums. It’s also know because it had one of the coolest album covers ever.

Bike/Pink Floyd
In honor of the beginning of Bike to Work Month here in Seattle. This track is from the first Pink Floyd album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn with Syd Barrett on guitar and singing. This is pre David Gilmore joining the band when Syd was the main songwriter. Definitely a little different than the Pink Floyd that you can hear on any classic rock radio station.
Thunder on the Mountain/Bob Dylan
The opening song on Bob’s latest album, Modern Times. Pretty crazy that I’ve gone three weeks without playing any Dylan. Check out the radio show he has on XM radio, Theme Time Radio Hour. He tackles a different theme every week to play songs around and spreads the good word. http://www.xmradio.com/bobdylan/#
We Don’t Run/Willie Nelson
Yet another great song and album from Willie, this is off of Songbird. He just keeps going and going, much like Bob Dylan. This album was produced by Ryan Adams and he couldn’t even mess it up…just kidding…kinda…
Roadworn and Weary/Supersuckers
From their country album, Must've Been High. Great band to see live, whether they are playing their country or rock sets. They are based out of Seattle and you can often see Eddie Spaghetti around town playing solo sets when they are not out on tour. New record for the 'suckers due out soon too.
Some Girls/Rolling Stones
From arguably their best record post Exile on Main Street days released in 1978 at the height of disco. One of the first Stones albums that I can remember getting and for some reason I think I first heard in from my uncle Tommy when he was giving me a ride to a grade school basketball game. Hoping to see the Martin Scorcese movie Shine a Light this week at the I-max.
Folks like Me/Geraldine Fibbers
The Geraldine Fibbers are mainly the brainchild of Carla Bozulich but the album this was taken from, Butch, also features Mr. Nels Cline. Nels of course is now a member of Wilco and also recorded a new album with Mike Watt. The Fibbers released a couple of albums in the mid-late 90’s that are both pretty darn good. Carla still keeps in real with various solo projects. She recorded an awesome cover of the entire Willie Nelson classic, Red Headed Stranger album.
New Resolution/Heartless Bastards
Hailing from Southwest Ohio, the Heartless Bastards have been around since 2003. This is from their first album, Stairs and Elevators. She has such a powerful voice and it just sounds like real, real rock and roll.
U.S. Mustard Company/Robert Pollard
From his first post-GBV solo album, From a Compound Eye. It’s a killer. Probably listen to this double album more than any of his other solo albums. For me, it’s pretty reminiscent of the early Guided By Voices records in that it’s all over the place sonically, both short and epic at the same time.
Free Cell Block F, ‘Tis Nazi U.S.A./Charles Mingus
This is from a live recording made in 1974, the Changes Volume 2 album. From reading his autobiography, Beneath the Underdog, you can get the impression the Mingus was one crazy guy…also genius…but crazy with a capital C.

Playlist:
Best of All Possible Worlds/Kris Kristofferson
Looking through some old records that we bought at a yard sale a few years ago, it came to me why I had never really listened to any of Kris Kristofferson’s records until recently. In with those records was a copy of A Star is Born soundtrack with him and Barbara Striesand. Now, I realize that that was completely unfair of me…if he’s good enough to play with Cash, Nelson, and Jennings in the Highwaymen, it’s probably ok to listen to him. This is off his debut record and every song on it is good.
Frankie’s Gun/Felice Brothers
My favorite new band. The first time I heard them was when they opened for the Drive By Truckers a few months ago. I was pretty blown away with how good and much fun they were to see live. This is from their self-titled American debut.
Daniel and the Sacred Harp/The Band
When asked to describe the Felice Brothers sound, I usually compare them with the Band. They both come from the mountains of New York, all the members sing, and they both sound like pure Americana. This song is from the Stage Fright album.
The Breeders/We’re Gonna Rise
From their new album Mountain Battles. Kim Deal has one of my favorite voices and can pretty much do no wrong in my book. But that being said, I think it’s a good album. They are playing the Sasquatch festival at the Gorge, but I’m still hoping for a Seattle show.
Shocker in Gloomtown/Guided By Voices
The Breeders covered this song and even featured the members from Guided By Voices in the video they made for the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esd8n6awI3w
The connection being that Robert Pollard and Kim Deal are both from Dayton, Ohio. This song first appeared on the Grand Hour ep in 1994.
The Shape is in a Trance/Thurston Moore
From his latest solo record, Trees Outside the Academy. He will be playing his first solo album, Psychic Hearts, live at the Pitchfork festival this summer. I like this trend that’s happening these days where bands are playing complete albums live in the order they appeared on the record.
Carbona Not Glue/The Ramones
My uncle Joe turned me on to the Ramones when I was in about 6th grade and I haven’t been quite the same since. God Bless the Ramones.
100,000 Fireflies/Superchunk
Well, I think I was about 15 years too late on this band. Picked up a compilation of their b-sides, singles, etc on a whim basically because I really like the name Superchunk. Sadly, they are no longer a band. This song in particular was a b-side to the Question is How Fast single.
Backstreets/Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band
For Danny Federuci, the longtime keyboard player for the E-Street Band who passed away last week. This song is taken from the recently released live at the Hammersmith/Odeon 1975 when the band was still relatively unknown, especially in England. Well after this show, that was no longer the case

Alien Lane 01
Echoes Myron/Guided By Voices
The name Alien Lanes Radio comes from the great GBV album 'Alien Lanes' so we will definitely be working our way through the GBV/Robert Pollard catalog, but this has always been one of my favorites from the classic album 'Bee Thousand.' Especially love the line 'we're finally here/and shit yeah it's cool/shouldn't it be/or something like that.'
Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing/Minutemen
One of the great, great song titles that the minutemen had. Story is that mike watt actually sent this song to the King of Pop for him to record but there was no response from MJ. Would have loved to have heard his version. Found on Double Nickles on the Dime, an album everyone should have.
White Sport Coat/Meat Puppets
Great cover of the Marty Robbins song. Found this on the website the Pups drummer, Derrick Bostrom maintains http://derrickbostrom.com/puppets/. It's a compilation that a fan put together of b-sides/radio appearances/live/rare songs. It's great. The Meat Puppets are back together (w/out Derrick Bostrom, but w/ Chris Kirkwood back in the mix) so check them out if you get a chance.
Blue Bayou/Roy Orbison
How can you not love his voice? I played this because the Meat Puppets song reminded me of their cover this Roy Orbison song. They tacked this song onto the end of a jam that also included Funkadelic and Black Sabbath if I'm not mistaken. Anyways, this track comes from a live album from '65 in Holland that was found in a used record store by my friend Chris (good find chris). I've only begun to scratch the surface on finding Roy Orbison tunes, so if you have any recommendations please let me hear 'em.
A Love Supreme (Part 1, Acknowledgement)/John Coltrane
From a compilation that was the first jazz album that I ever bought. How could you not become a fan of jazz after hearing this song? The Love Supreme album has recently been reissued with a second disc that includes a rare live perforance of the entire Love Supreme suite. It's pretty essential.
